The day was Friday Terrell Edmunds Jersey White , September 27, 2019.Steelers was sealed. It just took an additional 37 days until it became official. When the Philadelphia Eagles released L.J. Fort in September, the Steelers were no longer in line for a compensatory draft pick for the 2020 draft. The way the compensatory formula works is a team must lose more eligible players to free agency than what it gains. These players must stay with their new team through Week 10 of the ensuing NFL season. When Fort was released, the Steelers no longer had a net loss in players and we’re not eligible for any sort of compensatory draft pick unless the NFL stepped in and said their net loss was too much. Asking the NFL to do something in the Steelers favor is highly unlikely, let alone the gain of Steven Nelson is projected to be only one round less than the loss of Le’Veon Bell. So the Steelers were out of the pick they appeared to plan on receiving when they traded this year‘s regularly designated third-round pick in order to move up to draft Devin Bush. The only option left for the Steelers was to also cut one of their free-agent signings. With Mark Barron not factoring into the compensatory equation because he was released by his previous team, the only players who could work were Donte Moncrief or Steven Nelson. Before getting on to the ineptitude of Moncrief with the Steelers, the fantastic production of Steven Nelson should be noted as an excellent free-agent signing for 2019. Nelson has locked down the corner opposite of Joe Haden so much, teams have to look more towards Haden’s side then away from it. This is no knock on Joe Haden‘s ability to play. This is commending the Steelers defense Womens JuJu Smith-Schuster Jersey , particularly their secondary, for being much improved. Getting back to Moncrief, his time with the Steelers has been so underwhelming he has not even been active for every game in 2019. His statistics for the season are four catches on 15 targets for 18 yards. It should be noted that Moncrief injured his finger in training camp. But only having receptions in two games for the Steelers and having a catch rate of 26.7% is not numbers to warrant being the highest paid receiver on the Steelers. So what are the exact pros and cons for Moncrief being released by the Steelers? They’re fairly simple: ProsGaining a 2020 compensatory draft pickSaving $4 million towards a 2020 salary capNot worrying about Moncrief’s lack of production ConsCosting the Steelers $3.25 million in 2019 and another $1.75 million in dead money in 2020 Not getting the projected production from a free-agent signing NotesThe compensatory pick the Steelers are due to get in 2020 is projected to be a third-round pick. Steven Nelson‘s contract will cancel out Jesse James contract, leaving Le’Veon Bell‘s projected third-round value as what the Steelers should gain. But please note that these values are projected. When it comes to the money, the Steelers will have to pay Moncrief the remainder of his $1.5 million base salary unless he is signed by another team. Since his salary was broken up over weekly checks, Moncrief has already collected nearly $800k to date, so the Steelers would still owe over $700k if Moncrief remains out of the league. Even if the Steelers could get out of that $700k, they still paid out a $3.5 million signing bonus for a total of $4.3 million to a player with four catches. The math is obvious that Moncrief made over $1 million per reception with the Steelers. Moncrief was due a base salary of $3.5 million in 2020 as well as a $500k roster bonus which the Steelers will no longer have to pay. Had Moncrief even given numbers in production that he experienced in 2018 with the Jacksonville Jaguars Womens T. J. Watt Jersey , the Steelers may have been better off just keeping him and not worrying about the draft pick. With 48 receptions for 668 yards and three touchdowns in 2018, Moncrief had a 53.9% catching percentage. Granted those numbers were down from his time in Indianapolis, but all indications were Moncrief could give numbers similar to what he experienced to date in his NFL career. But it just never seem to work out. Was Donte Moncrief a terrible signing? Based on his results, absolutely. Did Steelers fans believe this back in March? For the most part, no. One last thing to consider is the Steelers are not out of the woods when it comes to the 2020 compensatory draft. Technically, the Lions could cut Jesse James before Week 10 and the Steelers are out of luck again. Or the Jets could cut Le’Veon Bell. But neither move would be wise financially as it would actually cost the teams more money for either player to not be on the roster. The Lions may possibly be feeling much like the Steelers do about Moncrief when it comes to James as as he only has seven receptions for 61 yards on the season. So the Donte Moncrief era in Pittsburgh is officially over. Although the Steelers have done well with signing players such as Steven Nelson, there are too many players such as Moncrief, Morgan Burnett JuJu Smith-Schuster Jersey White , and Ladarius Green. At least in this case, the Steelers were able to get back a projected third-round pick. D’Brickashaw Ferguson is back with the Jets, but not as a left tackle. The longtime fixture on the team’s offensive line retired after the 2015 season and he’s trying his hand at another role this summer. The Jets announced that Ferguson and his former teammate Calvin Pace are serving as Nunn-Wooten scouting fellows during training camp.Pace, who also retired after the 2015 season, spent eight seasons with the Jets. Ferguson was a 2006 first-round pick by the Jets and spent his entire career with the team.Ferguson and Pace used to play against Hines Ward, but the former Steelers wideout is now on their side as one of four Bill Walsh coaching interns. Ward previously interned with the Steelers and worked for the short-lived Alliance of American Football.Former Jets wideout David Clowney now coaches wide receivers at Howard and joins Ward, Missouri State assistant wide receivers coach Stephen Bravo-Brown and Bowie State head coach Damon Reginald Wilson as interns with the Jets this summer.
